Milly Velez

Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Mildred “Milly” Velez, has devoted most of her life to helping others. She spent 18 years leading a homeless youth shelter for young people who were discarded by their families – a population she has devoted over 25 years to. Through that work, which largely addresses trauma, mental health, housing, and life skills development, she was part of a mission that helped nearly 20,000 young people rebuild their lives.  In 2020, she suffered a nervous breakdown and found that many of the people she unselfishly shared love with did not reciprocate the love when she most needed it. She spent the next two years in self reflection and found herself in the process.  Today, she heads the Fibromyalgia Care Society of America, Inc, a 501c3 organization that helps people living with fibromyalgia, a nervous system disorder she lives with that was triggered by chronic trauma. Through that work, she has helped others living with fibromyalgia find their new normal and reclaim their lives.  To hear their testimonials check out the FCSA Youtube Page here

More about Milly...

Prior to Milly's 18th birthday she was able to check off all 10 points on a psychological assessment tool that gauges childhood trauma. She has survived rape, domestic violence and homelessness. Her life experiences have propelled her to advocate for social and racial justice causes. Her career began in 1997 at a NYC drop in center for homeless young people ages 13-24. She contributes her recent healing journey to faith and spiritual beliefs.  Nonetheless, her beliefs include understanding that everyone's journey is different and that faith based practices are within and are not to be forced on any individual.
